The journey to my 70’s actually started in earnest when I was 67, almost 68. I retired at about the same time my parents started needing more assistance. Along with my brothers and sister, someone was always available if needed. Since I was more available, their chauffeur was able to take them to doctors visits and make sure their medications were taken. We did get help for them so they could age in place at home. That made them both very happy.
One thing they shared quite often was that they wished they had been there for their parents more than they had. I always thought that they were really good to their parents. Now that I have been through that journey I understand. I wish I would have taken more time to be with them when they were younger. Careers and family seem to take presidence. They really wanted to be with us more.
I was so focused on me that I didn’t take the time to just stop for just a minute. Looking back, they tried really hard to get with me and my family. One good example is that they rented a condo at the beach every year for several weeks. The issue was that it was right after the school year started and getting away was impossible, but I probably could have spared a weekend.
My recommendation to you is to cherish time with your parents, children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters. One day you too will be older and it will be such a shame that you have any regrets.
I hope you’re you join me on this journey. Please feel free to leave a comment.
